Alfredo Gomez got the 14th edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs officially up and running with victory in the Sibiu prologue.

Bringing his Erzberg winning form to Romania, the KTM rider made short work of the city prologue, despite the damp and slippery conditions, to lead the field of Gold class riders home.

“This is a good start to the week. I’m feeling good on the bike and confident in my riding — I’ve come here looking for the win.

The top three finishers of the prologue have the option to choose the starting position for Wednesday’s opening off road day — first, second, third — with the winner getting first preference. Gomez will start third.

“I’m happy to start third tomorrow,” continued Gomez. “Honestly it’s been a while since I rode in the mud. It hasn’t rained at home in Spain since April, so third is good for me. I’ll take tomorrow steady, try not to make mistakes and see where I arrive at the midday service before pushing on.”

Putting in a solid and steady ride in the prologue, Husqvarna’s Billy Bolt placed as runner-up to Gomez.

“It was carnage out there,” said Bolt. “I learned from last year that riding smart was the best way and that’s what I did.

“I managed to pass a few riders on the way for second, so I’m happy with that but tomorrow is when the real fun and games start.”

Jonny Walker brought his KTM home for third. Moving up to fifth, he then found his way past two more riders in the closing stages to get third, meaning he’ll start day one first on the road.

“Third is bittersweet,” admitted Jonny. “I didn’t really want to start the first day in the mountains first but it is what it is now. I’ll crack on with it — I want to win.”

Holding third for much of the race distance, defending Romaniacs champion Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna) came across the finish line in fourth with Manuel Lettenbichler (KTM) fifth.

Despite battling with Gomez for the lead during the first three laps, Sherco’s Wade Young slipped back the order to outside the top five.

Making his debut in Romaniacs, David Knight damaged an exhaust pipe early on, but pushed on to take 12th.

“It’s great to be here,” smiled Knight. “It’s a lot of fun so far. I damaged my exhaust early on and that slowed things a bit, but to be honest I’m happy with this position. My GPS skills are not too sharp so at least there’ll be a few tracks to follow.”

The 2017 Red Bull Romaniacs will see riders get down to business with the first day in the mountains on Wednesday 26.
